Kralingseplas is the perfect location for a day out with children. On the west side of the Kralingseplas are many facilities for children such as lawns and playgrounds. There is a zipline/flying fox, playground for toddlers, playground for older kids and a water slide. Also located on the west side is the beach and the children’s pool.
On the north side of the Kralingseplas on the edge of the Kralingsebos is a nice playground and meadow.
Between the west side play area and the north side play area there is a petting zoo (Kinderboerderij de Kraal).
On the easternmost corner of the lake there is a small Deer enclosure.
Kralingse Bos / Kralingse Plas is one of my top three things to do with kids in Rotterdam. When the weather is lovely, we jump in the bakfiets and ride over here.
We always like to start our ride at the corner of Langepad and Kralingse Plaslaan. We ride down Kralingse Plaslaan, and enjoy the views over the lake and the breeze that usually accompanies it. We turn down the Plaszoom and ride past the windmill restaurants. We keep riding along the Plaszoom until we reach the deer enclosure, where we usually take a little break to pat the deer and have a drink of water and maybe some morning tea.
After the Deer enclosure, we backtrack a little, back to the path that follows the lake around, and ride until we come to the first playground. This playground is much better for older kids, my 18 month old needs very close supervision and a lot of assistance here, so we usually only stay for 15-20 minutes.
Back into the bakfiets, and we continue riding around the lake. If you come to any forks in the bike path, we take the left-hand fork to stay lakeside.
After another 10 minutes or so, we come to Kinderboerderij De Kraal. We park the bike here and usually spend a good hour or so with the animals. Once we’re ready to move on, we only need to go a few meters further up the road and we’re at the beach, the paddling pool and the playground. This is a brilliant picnic spot, and we can stay here for hours on end.
Once we’re all fed, and have had our fill of playing and swimming, it’s back into the bike and ready for the ride home. Generally at least on of the kids will fall aseep on the way home – it’s always a big day, but always a great day.
